College Baseball Power Rankings

By Andrew Musur on April 23, 2015

If you have been a follower of my page for a while now, you probably already know that I write A LOT about college football and basketball. Though both of those sports are great, they are both currently out of season.

With that being said I thought it was time I switch it up a little bit. For the first time ever I am going to talk about college baseball. Here we go.

No. 1 LSU 35-6 (12-5), Southeastern Conference

LSU has been one of the best hitting teams in all of college baseball this season. The Tigers have a batting average of .320 on the year. A big reason for LSU’s offensive success can be attributed to slugger Alex Bregman.

Bregman has hit eight homers on the year and is batting a whopping .329. The Tigers can really get their bats around the ball; no wonder they rank sixth in the country in slugging percentage at .481.

LSU starts their three game conference series with No. 2 Texas A&M on April 23.

No. 2 Texas A&M 36-5 (12-5), Southeastern Conference

Texas A&M is one of the most balanced teams on this year’s college baseball field. The Aggies have some of the best hitting in the country, but they also posses some extremely sound pitchers.

A&M ranks in the top 10 of the country in: batting average, home runs per game, slugging percentage, on base percentage, earned run average and strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Aggies are led by junior Logan Taylor who is hitting an impressive .376 this season and has hit 10 home runs. Taylor will have to continue his ways if Texas A&M hopes to make their way to the College World Series.

No. 3 UCLA 28-8 (14-4), Pac 12 Conference

UCLA is a team full of great pitchers. The Bruins rank second in the country in earned run average, only allowing 2.18 runs per game.

Junior James Kaprielian has been the ace for the Bruins. Kaprielian has 7 wins on the season and 81 strikeouts. The junior has also posted an impressive 2.12 ERA this season.

Along with Kaprielian the Bruins have utilized their entire rotation. Grant Watson and Griffin Canning are also two starting pitchers for UCLA that have ERAs in the low two’s.

Watson has posted a 2.15 ERA and Canning has posted a 2.63 ERA during this season.

No. 4 Louisville 31-9 (19-2), Atlantic Coast Conference

Louisville is another team that has a ton of depth when it comes to pitching. The Cardinals currently sit at 5th in the country in earned run average at 2.34 per game.

Starters Kyle Funkhouser and Josh Rogers have been throwing extremely well all season. Funkhouser currently has a 2.41 ERA and five wins, while Rogers sits at a 2.97 ERA and has six wins.

No. 5 TCU 31-8 (7-5), Big 12 Conference

TCU may not be the strongest hitting team in college baseball, but boy do they know how to pitch. The Horned Frogs are currently the top ranked team in the nation in earned run average.

TCU’s ERA is 2.18, pretty darn impressive. The Horned Frogs also rank first in the country with a whopping 4.79 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Good defense doesn’t stop there for TCU, as the Horned Frogs rank third in the country in field percentage at 98.2 percent.

No. 6 Florida 32-10 (12-6), Southeastern Conference

This is my third team from the Southeastern Conference in the top 10. The SEC is the heart of competitive college football, but it is also the heart of quality baseball.

Florida is a team that doesn’t make many mistakes defensively. The Gators rank number one in the country in field efficiency, fielding 98.5 percent of the balls that come their way.

Florida is not only good on the defensive side of the ball, but they can also score. The Gators have averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.

No. 7 Arizona State 25-11 (13-5), Pac 12 Conference

Arizona State is led by power hitter Bobby Dalbec. Dalbec is batting a staggering .352 and has belted 12 home runs. He has 51 hits on the year, which already surpasses his total from last season where he played in 14 more games.

The Sun Devils are a force to be reckoned with, but still have a lot of work to do if they plan on taking home a Pac 12 Conference title.

No. 8 Illinois 32-6-1 (10-1), Big Ten Conference

Illinois is another team with a very strong pitching rotation and an even stronger bullpen. The Fighting Illini rank in the top 10 in both earned run average (2.46) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.08).

Reliever Tyler Jay has put up an unbelievable .68 ERA this season and has recorded eight saves. Jay is a guy all over professional scouts’ lists. The Illini have won their last 14 games in a row; we’ll see if they can keep up the momentum heading into May.

No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 28-9 (6-3) Big West Conference

2.26: that is what UCSB’s earned run average has been this year. The Gauchos rank third nationally in that statistical category. Another team from California, UCSB is the real deal.

The Gauchos hold two impressive wins over USC from earlier this season, and they will need to play to their potential if they hope to make a run to Omaha.

No. 10 Southern California 29-10 (10-5), Pac 12 Conference

USC is a team that doesn’t really jump out at you in any statistical category, but the Trojans still have a lot of talent and potential to make a deep run this year.

USC currently sits at third in the latest Pac 12 baseball standings and will need to utilize their future series with Arizona State to make a final push for a Pac 12 crown.
