Land the Position You Desire

During the difficult times of trying to navigate the end of college and beginning of your career search, it is important to be using the best resources to aid in getting you hired. From flaunting your club participation to highlighting your volunteer experiences, you need to be letting potential employers know that you are unique, you have great skills, and you have different qualities than any other employee. Your LinkedIn profile is a great start to this! Many teachers actually have their students create their profiles during a class, but others just strongly encourage its use. The best thing to remember is that we are living in a digital age. When you get exciting news you text it to your closest friends and family, or you post it on social media; career searches are no different. While some companies hire the old fashioned way, a vast majority hire off of a job search site or by coming across a qualified profile on LinkedIn. In addition to using LinkedIn as a job seeking social media site, it is also important to remember that employers check Facebook pages, Twitter, and Instagram accounts as indications of who candidates are as people. While many argue it is unfair to judge a person based on sites which are not professionally managed, it also helps potential employers realize who the candidates are aside from just what they say they are. A good thing to keep in mind is that if you are about to post something you would not want your grandmother or a boss to see, it would be worth rethinking the post.

Another great thing to remember is that you should create a few different versions of your resume which are tailored to your specific job choices. For example; if you want a position as an in-home nanny you will put all of your childcare experiences ahead of your other skills on your resume so the parents can feel secure that you know what you are doing for their children. Or, if you were hoping to land a job selling cars you would want to highlight your previous sales jobs and your negotiating abilities. Highlight the specific skills which are valuable to the job you desire.

Another aspect of landing a job that many people forget is that it is all about who you know. Plain and simple. Who you know. If you are able to network as often as possible it will greatly help your potential to find a job. Getting to know the people in your desired industry is a great way to get your name out there to help you land a job. Jobs in creative fields are especially reliant on networking since those jobs require great people skills in order to be successful. Degrees are great, they show a candidate is dedicated and willing to work hard, but they are not everything. Many people have expressed their opinions that jobs more often than not, require skills taught uniquely by each company and they are skills not learned in a classroom. These are the skills that can be learned through internships or entry level positions landed via networking.

When you are on the hunt for your dream job you do not want anything coming between you and your desired position. Make sure you take the necessary steps it will take to make yourself look presentable to employers. You want them to know you will not only do a great job at your job, but that you will also make their company better once you are hired. They want candidates who will be full of fresh ideas to improve business.
