The Dyson … Hairdryer?

By Victoria Robertson on May 9, 2016

At one point in time, vacuum cleaners didn’t cost a small fortune. But, with the growing age of technology continuously changing our use of everyday items, so do the prices for simple household items, like the vacuum cleaner.

Known for their incredible suction (and incredibly high prices), the Dyson vacuum cleaners are well worth the price to many, especially with the continuing innovation that makes a task as cumbersome as cleaning the house an absolute breeze.

Still, is this technology really necessary in other areas as well?

According to Dyson, yes.

The company’s new project takes on a much smaller machine: the hairdryer. And not just a hairdryer, but perhaps one of the most powerful (and overpriced) that you can possibly buy.

In fact, the new hairdryer launched by Dyson is actually so powerful that it comes along with a rubber mat that’s meant to keep it from flying off the counter.

This powerful little project is one that’s four years in the making. It involved 103 engineers, over 1,000 miles of test hair and a whopping $71 million investment. Its inventor refers to it as “the hairdryer rethought.” But for the general public, you can just call it the Dyson Supersonic.

So what prompted the company to invent such an expensive hairdryer? According to the company’s founder, billionaire entrepreneur, Sir James Dyson, “We realized that hairdryers can cause extreme heat damage to hair. So I challenged Dyson engineers to really understand the science of hair and develop our version of a hairdryer, which we think solves these problems.”

Of course, this project would’ve been much more impressive had they been able to create a hairdryer that wasn’t nearly as expensive. So how much does it cost? A measly $399.

Realistically, many aren’t going to have $400 to toss towards a hairdryer, especially when the alternative can cost as low as $20.

Still, many will be willing to splurge on this product, especially if it’s as good as it sounds.

The hairdryer will be sold at the $399 price exclusively at Sephora beginning this fall and can be reserved online now.

And as if that isn’t enough, a limited edition hairdryer (that comes in a chestnut colored, hand-finished leather case that’s designed by James Dyson himself) sold out online within hours of being released, and they went at $450 a pop. So if that tells you how much people are willing to pay for these things, don’t expect a sale anytime soon.

And of course, the world quickly took to voicing their opinions on social media, most of the outrage due to the price.

However, the Dyson lovers quickly justified this price by comparing it to similar luxury products, i.e. Beats headphones and Apple Watches. In reality, people overspend on such products all the time, so we shouldn’t be shocked that new technology would warrant these higher prices.

So while it’s more than possible to simply use a towel to dry your hair, or even a more inexpensive hairdryer, those that have the extra money and find this product appealing (especially given its claim that damaged hair will be a thing of the past), should feel comfortable spending it.

Because when it comes down to it, you need to spend your money on what you want, and don’t let others tell you any differently.

Sure the hairdryer is expensive, but that doesn’t mean that no one’s going to buy it. In fact, as pre-sales have shown, sales will actually skyrocket upon the release of the Dyson Supersonic.
