Why We Should Stop Talking About Prince's Death

By Shaina Eldredge on May 11, 2016

It is only May of 2016, not even halfway through the calendar year, and we have already experienced the loss of many great famous performers. David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Doris Roberts: their deaths came, we mourned, and life moved on. A more recent death, however, of an incredibly talented and flamboyant performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, is still buzzing about.

I first heard of Prince’s death sitting in a friend’s house, scrolling through Facebook while she was making breakfast for us after an early morning class. I read the news, and told her about it. She said she needed to tell her mom, and we talked about it for a moment, and then went about what we were doing. Prince wasn’t really popular for our time, but he was definitely popular when our parents were growing up and loving music. But despite his decrease in relevance, he was still touring and creating new music up until late 2015, a sure sign of someone passionate for what they do.

That day in my friend’s kitchen, I was the first of my friends and family to hear the news. I was prepared for the Purple Rain hashtag, for the mourning posts on Tumblr, and I stayed respectfully silent while everyone else mourned Prince’s death. However, at this point, Prince should be resting in peace, no longer a part of our world, as sad as that is to say. Prince keeps coming up in the news, though, simply because his death is unexplained. And to this I have to ask: why?

Why do we need to know how this man died? I know we want to know why someone that we love, and even looked up to, is no longer with us? The satisfaction of knowing what caused Prince’s death won’t do much. You’ll sleep the same way, you’ll eat just fine, you just want to be included in knowing something you don’t. This seems to be a common thing with celebrities: once people are given enough of someone’s personal life, they think they are entitled to know, and in some cases to judge, what that person is doing or what they have done.

If it’s a question of whether a doctor intentionally killed Prince, which seems to be a possibility, then yes, snooping is necessary, but I do not see the reason for posting it on all news and social media outlets. It is similar to why the Greeks and Romans started believing in various deities: they just want to explain what they do not understand, because they do not want to not understand and just leave things how they are.
