Organization Tips For Your First Apartment

By Kylie Exline on May 17, 2016

Moving into your first apartment is beyond exciting. It can also be slightly overwhelming as well.

You are officially on your own (finally), paying rent (the joys), and have to decide where to place things like a family photo and excess towels. I mean, we only use one towel at a time, so do we even need six of them? Yes, yes we do.

In order to be stress free, you need to stay organized. This way your apartment stays clean, new and something mom and dad would be proud of.

Stay on top of chores.

I know, that word brings back terrible memories of chore lists that our parents would give us weekly in order to be given $5 every Friday. Yet, it is imperative that we still manage them.

If you are living with roommates, it may be a good idea to write down what is expected of everyone on a dry erase board. If not, then just make sure they do their part. It is very annoying to have to babysit, though.

If you allow trash to pile up, well that is certainly not good for you or the apartment’s aroma. If you notice your laundry is getting a tad out of hand, dedicate a day for “Laundry Day.”

It is way easier and more beneficial to keep up with small chores along the way of making messes. If you spill tomato sauce, do not leave it for later. Nothing good comes out of later.

Purchase bins/chests.

When you are attempting to keep an apartment organized, you need items to help you. For instance, when you don’t know where to place linen or Halloween décor, purchase bins.

They are super easy to store away, stack, or hide under your bed. Plus, they are relatively cheap. #Winning. Many of the chests or shelves are alluring to the eyes, so you are not just stuck with ugly, gray bins. You have options, people.

Sometimes even stacking perishable food items away can be a method of organization. We do not always need to keep Oreos out in the open. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Wrong.

These bins will really help you stay on the right path of managing your apartment, and give you easy access to your things. How great.

Store things properly.

This is a biggie for many people. I get it, if we decide we do not like our current outfit, we throw said garments on the floor and continue to change for 4.3 more times. It happens.

However, we need to learn to put away those clothes right away. This avoids wrinkles, a mess, and assuming everything is dirty so you have six loads to wash. No one wants that.

This can include food, because you should not be leaving Thursday’s dinner on the table until next Thursday. Mom would be disappointed. Plus, you are wasting food that way. Purchase leftover containers and your job is done.

Find a place for specific items and then you will know where to locate them when they are needed. Paper towels can go in the pantry, cups in the cupboard, and hangers in the closet. Easy peasy.

Plan cleaning days.

This is what adulting is all about. It is also a necessary way of maintaining that organized apartment of yours. You should schedule cleaning days in order to build self-discipline, as well as to stick to an agenda.

We all know about spring cleaning and those random tangents we get into. However, they do not usually last that long and the apartment is back to a mess in 24 hours. This is why planning these days is essential and they help keep you organized.

It can be fun to jam to music, assign different areas of the house to specific roommates, and then relax in the clean, nice smelling apartment. If you live by yourself, there should be less mess to clean, plus you do not have to wear pants. Sounds delightful.

You can even dedicate certain days to certain chores. Kitchen can be Monday, laundry on Wednesday, and bathroom on Saturday. This way you are not dealing with everything all at once, and you can relax on your off days. We all need those off days.

Moving into an apartment is great, as is decorating and deciding where to place furniture, books and frames. However, there are methods to staying organized and having your apartment look presentable a majority of the time.

Making sure you stay on top of chores is extremely necessary and useful in hindsight. It is easier to clean messes up as you make them instead of waiting until you ran out of forks. It can be annoying, yes, but super necessary.

Purchasing bins or storage spaces can really allow you to put things where they belong, and definitely makes it easier. Then, stick to your cleaning days and you are set.

Keeping your apartment organized can be somewhat difficult, but it is a must. Plus, most of our lives are already pretty hectic, so it might be the time to have a relaxing home to go to after a long day. So get to organizing, folks.
